Students at SMPN 294 Jakarta Process Waste into Crafts with Economic Value

Students of SMPN 294 Jakarta in Karet Kuningan Urban Village, Setiabudi District, South Jakarta developed waste management by processing inorganic waste into handicrafts that have utility and economic value.

Care about the cleanliness

Head of Karet Kuningan Urban Village, Leo Yudhantara said the raw materials for these handicrafts come from waste found in the school environment. Before use, students and teachers first sort the waste into organic and inorganic waste.

"I also thank the teachers who have guided these students to become children who care about the cleanliness of their environment from an early age," he said, Monday (10/19).

He hopes students will increasingly understand the importance of waste management from an early age. The activity is also expected to foster creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit in students.

"We hope that the implementation of the zero waste concept, by minimizing the waste produced through reduction, reuse, and sustainable waste processing, can be followed by other schools," he hoped.

Meanwhile, Headmaster of SMPN 294 Jakarta, Nina Lestari said this activity is one of the school's efforts to foster concern for environmental cleanliness.

Nina added that currently, the inorganic waste collected and processed by students is used to make various handicrafts, one of which is key chains in various colors and motifs.

"We also have modern drainage systems and biopore holes. Waste management here is quite good. We utilize everything to the maximum," she admitted.
